Backend & Systems Focused Software Engineer
Java • Python • Full-Stack Capable
Designing maintainable backend systems with clear architecture and strong validation.
about me.
Every career has a story, and mine has been shaped by two demanding worlds—healthcare and technology—where building and operating reliable systems with clarity and accountability truly matter. Before transitioning into software engineering, I spent over a decade in healthcare and the United States Army, experiences that developed a leadership-driven, systems-oriented approach to problem solving that now guides how I design and build software.
In the Army, I served as a senior Non-Commissioned Officer, working as both a Medical Laboratory Technician and a Satellite Communications Operator/Maintainer. These roles required maintaining and operating complex technical systems, leading teams, and making informed decisions under real-world constraints. They reinforced the importance of clear interfaces, fault tolerance, and disciplined execution—principles I now apply directly to software architecture and development.
As a registered nurse, I primarily worked in small, free-standing emergency departments with minimal on-site support—often staffed by a single physician, one nurse, one technician, and one radiology technologist. I also worked in cardiac catheterization labs and international radiology, gaining experience in highly technical, tightly coordinated workflows. Across these roles, I learned how to evaluate complex systems, anticipate failure points, and design processes that perform reliably when redundancy is limited.
Today, I’m an early-career software engineer completing a master’s degree in Information Technology – Software Engineering. I’m passionate about writing clean, maintainable code and building systems that are correct, testable, and resilient. Whether I’m developing Java applications, designing backend logic, optimizing SQL workflows, or building dynamic web tools with Python and Flask, I emphasize precision, traceability, and long-term maintainability.
My approach to engineering is grounded in leadership and systems thinking: define clear requirements, design for reliability, and validate behavior through testing and iteration. I’ve worked on projects involving automated testing, modular software design, database engineering, EMR optimization, and end-to-end application development. I enjoy translating complex requirements into well-structured solutions—and continuously improving them through thoughtful architecture and disciplined execution.
As I continue to grow as an engineer, I aim to contribute to teams that value ownership, craftsmanship, and strong system design—regardless of domain. I’m interested in roles where software is expected to scale, adapt, and be trusted, and where thoughtful engineering decisions make a meaningful impact.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my work.
Education
2024 - Present
University of Maryland Global Campus
Currently completing a graduate program focused on advanced software development, engineering methodologies, and large-scale system design. With a 4.00 GPA and one semester remaining, I’ve strengthened my ability to plan, design, and implement complex software systems while applying modern practices such as Agile, test-driven development, usability engineering, and project management. Coursework in computer systems architecture, software requirements, software design, and verification and validation has deepened my understanding of how to build reliable, user-centered applications at scale.
This program has given me hands-on experience with the full software lifecycle—from writing clear requirement specifications to designing modular architectures, implementing solutions with modern development tools, and applying rigorous testing techniques to ensure correctness. As I continue toward my capstone, I’m focused on integrating these skills into leading structured, maintainable, and cost-effective software projects that meet real-world constraints.
2022 - 2023
University of Maryland Global Campus
Completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a 3.66 GPA and multiple Dean’s List honors. The program strengthened my foundation in algorithms, data structures, secure software development, system architecture, and relational database design. I completed advanced coursework in object-oriented and concurrent programming, compiler theory, and software engineering practices, all of which shaped how I analyze problems and design scalable solutions.
Throughout the program, I built several full-stack and backend applications in Java, Python, Flask, and SQL. These projects emphasized modularity, clarity, and maintainability—reinforcing the principles I bring into my work as a software engineer: thoughtful design, reliable execution, and a focus on systems people can depend on.
2009 - 2010
University of Maryland School of Nursing
Completed an intensive, competency-based BSN program built around evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, and patient-centered care. The curriculum emphasized health assessment, foundational and complex nursing care, pathophysiology, pharmacology, community health, pediatrics, mental health, and reproductive health—paired with extensive clinical rotations across acute, community, and specialized settings. Through this program, I learned to integrate clinical judgment, resilience, and leadership into fast-paced environments while delivering safe, compassionate care.
This experience strengthened my ability to analyze complex situations, work collaboratively across disciplines, and adapt quickly under pressure—skills that later translated directly into my approach to software engineering, systems thinking, and problem-solving.
Certifications
September 2025
Associate Software Developer
IEEE Computer Society
An industry-recognized certification that strengthens the same principles that guide my approach to engineering: clarity, structure, and reliability. It reflects my ability to define precise, testable requirements; design scalable and maintainable system architectures; and apply disciplined construction practices that support stability and long-term growth. This certification also demonstrates my proficiency in selecting and executing effective testing strategies to validate functionality and overall software quality. Together, these competencies reinforce my commitment to building dependable, well-engineered solutions grounded in thoughtful analysis and user-focused design.
